In the Complexity Space, continuous, often unpredictable change is the “normal” state. Traditional top-down, “command and control” styles of leadership are not effective when the “right” answer is always changing!

Yet it is critical to have catalysts; guides who can perturb existing patterns and influence the system to change. We call this phenomenon “influence-ship” to distinguish it from traditional leadership. ¬† Influencers exist at all levels of the organization, in both formal and informal capacities.

We have identified “influence-ship” as an Ecosystem Lever because we believe it is possible to intentionally shift this set of behaviors. ¬†Specific requests might include:

  • Collecting and sharing stories
  • Assigning responsibility and accountability for projects in different ways
  • Sharing models and methods like Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership II.
